Barbecue sandwiches with coleslawA large city with deep cultural roots, Lafayette, LA is called the Heart of the Acadiana, which is the center of Cajun culture in the state. Situated on the Vermilion River, bayou cultural heritage is big on food, especially Southern-style dishes with soul food and French influences. Just like everything in Louisiana, smoked meat on the bayou –and especially in our city– is done with lots of flavor. Here are our five favorite barbecue restaurants in The Hub City.

1. Johnson’s Boucaniere

Smoked meats are this Southern food joint’s specialty. With a menu boasting smoked sausages, pulled pork, brisket, tasso, and beef jerky, you can’t go wrong with ordering a protein-heavy dish. Although the family’s restaurant opened in 2008, it has a long history in Southern Louisiana, stemming from a 1930s grocery store that offered up smoked meats to customers. With delicious, quick food served up on disposable plates, a stop at Johnson’s sunny outdoor patio is a great way to enjoy your Cajun country experience.

2. MIDCITY Smokehouse

Locally owned and operated, Tchoup’s MIDCITY Smokehouse opened in 2020 believing the city needed a comfortable place to eat great food. The owners renovated a 70-year-old house, keeping the historic elements intact to make it really feel like home. The cozy joint is best known for its combo plates. If you really want to dig in, try the Whole Hog, a $38 meat and side-heavy plate not for the faint of heart.

3. East Gate BBQ Express

Located East of Lafayette in the town of Youngsville, East Gate BBQ Express is a no-frills truly Southern style place with a walk-up window serving up unforgettable take-out. The small hole-in-the-wall joint also offers brisket, sausage, and pulled pork by the pound for those who want to bring it home family-style. A fantastic array of sides, including mac and cheese, baked beans, and coleslaw, East Gate is a must-stop for those who can’t get enough of Southern flavor.

4. Dickey’s

Dickey’s may be a chain eatery but with a menu featuring a long list of soul food sides and smoked meats, the Texas-inspired restaurant has perfected the art of satiating the need for great Southern food. The chain opened in the 1940s and since then has been serving up an incredible assortment of down-home favorites. A unique twist on the traditional styles, Dickey’s even features their own versions of a Southern-style taco made with smoked meats.

5. Blanchard’s BBQ

The generations of the Blanchard family have dedicated their lives to smoking delicious Texas-style brisket and creating hand-cut poutine for South Louisianians to enjoy. Traditional-style food with a contemporary twist, Blanchard’s also proudly features a diverse choice of sauces to choose from, from espresso to creole mustard.

Cajun food is known the world over for packing lots of flavor and featuring a variety of dishes from diverse culinary influences.
