6 Best Fishing Spots in and Around Lafayette, LA

Looking to hook some of the local catch while visiting Lafayette, LA? You’ll find a plethora of locations to throw that line. Anglers come from around the world to fish in our bayous, lakes, and rivers. We know deciding where to go can be difficult if you’re not familiar with the region, so we’ve narrowed the list down to some of our favorites.

1. Palmetto Island State Park

This beautiful well-maintained park has several ponds that are home to catfish, bass, sac-a-lait, bream, choupique, and alligator gar. Motorized boats are not allowed, and hunters can either hike to one of the three ponds or launch a kayak or canoe and visit all three. If you don’t have your own boat transportation, canoes are available for rent.

2. Beaver Park

Partially bordered by the Vermilion River, this area is popular for bass fishing. The park also features a paved boat landing for convenient and free water access. Don’t be surprised to see an alligator or two enjoying a swim around the large pond.

3. Veterans Park

If you’re looking for a great place to take the kiddies fishing, this park offers a small, quaint pond that’s perfect for the little ones. No boat needed—just throw a line from shore. When the kids tire from this activity, they can meander over to the slide and swing set or feed the ducks at the creek.

4. Girard Park

This hatchery provides plenty of rainbow trout each year, but you can also find catfish. You do need a Louisiana fishing license, which is fairly easy to obtain. Girard Park does limit the amount of fish you can take away to five.

5. South Louisiana Redfishing Charters

Perhaps you’re thinking of chartering a boat for your next fishing adventure. This operation boasts knowledgeable and professional guides who know where to find the good stuff. The site also has a limit of five fish to take home, but you can catch and release as long as you’d like.

 

6. Catfish Heaven Aqua Farm and RV Park

Looking for a place to park for the weekend or even a few days? This park has pretty much everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay during your vacation. Enjoy boating on one of the three fishing ponds, or toss a line from shore to catch the–you got it–catfish! Located just seven miles outside of Lafayette, this lovely area is perfect for the whole family. And don’t forget to bring Fido, because our canine friends are welcome!
