Chevy Safety Assist consists of six advanced systems that use radar, sonar, sensors, and cameras to continually scan the area around you. They warn of potential accidents, giving you time to react and prevent them. Several of these systems can also actively intervene to protect you. We will examine these Chevy safety features and see how they work.
Chevy Safety Features: Advanced Technology To Keep You Safe
Following Distance Indicator
This feature uses a camera or radar, depending on your Chevy model, to watch for vehicles ahead. It measures the distance between you and the other vehicle and displays the distance in seconds. This allows you to determine if you’re too close and reduce speed to increase the distance again.
Front Collision Alert
This system uses radar and a camera to identify vehicles ahead of you. It calculates the distance between your Chevy and the other vehicle. If you’re closing too fast, you’ll hear a chime sound. A warning icon will appear on your front screen to warn of a potential accident. This enables you to brake or take evasive action to prevent a collision.
Automatic Emergency Braking
This feature works with the Front Collision Alert. If you don’t brake after an alert has sounded, it automatically applies the brakes for you to prevent a collision (or reduce damage from one).
Front Pedestrian Braking
This system is similar to emergency braking above, but it’s only active at speeds between 5 and 50 mph. It can detect pedestrian movement and will enhance braking capacity so you can stop faster. If you haven’t reacted to a potential collision with a pedestrian, it applies hard braking to bring you to an instant stop to prevent the collision.
IntelliBeam
This system is active at night and uses sensors to identify oncoming headlights or the tail lights of a vehicle in front. If lights are detected, it automatically switches your high beams to low beams to prevent blinding other drivers. Once the lights have passed, the system switches back to high beams to provide increased visibility.
Lane Keep Assist
Straying from your lane can be dangerous, as your Chevy could be struck by another vehicle. This feature uses a camera to identify the lane lines and road edge markings and instantly warns you if you’re about to cross them and your direction indicator is switched off. A warning icon appears on your front screen, and you’ll hear warning chimes.
If your Chevy continues to move to cross the lane lines and you’re not actively steering, it provides a gentle tug on the steering wheel to alert you to turn back into your lane.
In addition to these systems, your Chevy may have even more specialized safety systems. If you’d like to know more, contact us today at Service Chevrolet in Lafayette, LA.
