Check Air Pressure

The air pressure in each tire should always be kept at precisely the PSI recommended in your owner’s manual. You can measure air pressure once or twice a month to ensure this. If your car has an automatic tire pressure monitor, pay attention to its warnings as well. 

Look for Signs of Damage

While checking air pressure, take a few moments to examine each tire for indications of damage or premature wear. If you notice excessive cracks in the sidewalls, the tires may no longer be safe to use. Likewise, deep cuts, gashes, embedded objects, or strange bulges in the rubber could threaten the structural integrity of the tire. 

Replace Worn-Out Tires

Once tires reach a certain age (usually the three or four-year mark), you should start paying closer attention to the tread depths. When new, most tires have tread depths of 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch, which gradually wears down. When the tread depths reach 2/32 of an inch, it’s time to install a new set of tires. 

Rotate Twice a Year

As tires tend to wear down unevenly, it’s important to have them rotated frequently because uneven wear puts tires at risk of blowing out or skidding on the road. It also shortens the lifespan of the full set of four. For most drivers, rotations should be carried out biannually. 

Have Your Tires Aligned

As you drive over rough patches of the road, your car’s tires can become jolted ever-so-slightly out of their original position. Stronger bumps over potholes or against curbs can worsen this misalignment. And if your tires have become misaligned, they’ll increase rolling drag, wear down faster, and create a safety hazard.

Have Your Tires Balanced
