You have a vast array of options available to you when you’re shopping for a vehicle, which can make the process feel pretty overwhelming. If you narrow things down to just trucks, you have a ton of options; narrowing it down further to used trucks, you still have a ton of options; and even if you only look at used Chevy trucks, you still have a huge variety. That’s why it helps to choose the right used Chevrolet dealer so you have people to help you sort through all of this and find what you’re looking for. Fortunately for you, that’s exactly what you’ll find here at Service Chevrolet with our amazing team of people.

While we’re always happy to answer all of your questions and work with you directly, we also know it helps to get things started on your own and figure out some details. To help with that, today we’re going to take you through some of the important things to consider when looking at used Chevy trucks to help you find the right one. To ensure you get the perfect vehicle, we need to work directly with you, but we can get you started today and assist with narrowing down all of those options. Just remember that the right answer ultimately depends on what you require from a truck and making sure you get something that delivers.

First, Consider Capability Needs

The first thing we do when trying to figure out which truck is right for us—whether we’re looking at new or used models—is consider what we need it to be able to do. You can try to skip this part and go straight to looking at different classes and models, but you’ll ultimately need to figure this out anyway, so it’s better to focus on it initially. Unfortunately, this isn’t something we can answer for you, but we can help you consider this subject. For starters, think about the weight limits you need your truck to be able to handle in terms of both payload and towing; make sure you’re pretty generous here and overestimate a little bit without going too crazy.

In addition to payload and towing, think about how you plan on using your truck each day because that’s going to guide some important decisions. Do you need something for basic commuting to job sites, or are you looking for a truck that can reach difficult locations through challenging terrain? Is it purely for use as a workhorse, or do you want something that’s perfect for having fun on the weekend, too? These are important considerations that will guide you as you look at different models, so be sure to figure these things out or at least have a rough sense of what you need your truck to be able to handle.

An orange 2021 Chevy Colorado Z71 is shown from the front at an angle after leaving a used Chevrolet dealer.

Second, Choose the Size That Works for You

Now that we have that out of the way, we can focus on some more specifics, and a great place to start is with the overall size and class that will work best for you. To start with, you should consider whether something smaller like the midsize Chevy Colorado will meet your needs or if you require the full-size power and functionality of something like the Chevy Silverado. That stuff you figured out above about capability and what you need from your truck will make this a lot easier, which is why we started with that first.

Even if you know you need the kind of power that only a full-size truck can deliver; you still have more decisions to make. When looking at used Chevy Silverado 1500 models, you can find an impressive range of different cab sizes and truck beds available—Chevy has offered five combinations of these for many years now. Consider how many passengers you need to have along with you on a regular basis, and choose the cab size that works best for this. Similarly, be realistic about the length of items you typically need to load up in your truck’s bed, and make sure you get a used truck with enough space for what you need.

Third, Look at Different Models

Now, the fun part—once you’ve got these basics figured out, you can start looking at different used Chevy trucks to find fantastic models that will work well for you. As we said a moment ago, if you want something with a midsize design, then the Colorado is an amazing choice that gives you impressive power and bold performance for its size. Due to its smaller design and robust capabilities, a used Chevy Colorado is perfect for heading off-road and taking on difficult trails: look for a Z71 model for serious off-road performance.

If you need a full-size truck, then the legendary Chevy Silverado is an amazing choice with a lot to offer. You have a huge variety of different Silverado models and trim levels to consider when looking at used pickups, so be ready to do a bit of navigating. In terms of trims, keep an eye out for a Z71 or Trail Boss model if you want to go off-road or go for a recent ZR2 model if you want truly exceptional capabilities out on the trail. If luxury and innovative technology are what you prefer, then you should look for a High Country model for the most impressive features on a Silverado. Finally, keep in mind that you have several Silverado models available, including the baseline 1500, a more-powerful Silverado 2500 HD, and an incredibly robust Silverado 3500 HD with dual rear wheels available to boost payload and fifth wheel towing capacities.

A black 2021 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD is shown from the front at an angle while towing bales of hay.

Fourth, Consider the Model Years

As you’re exploring all of these features and options, you’ll also want to keep in mind that there can be some important differences in the same truck model when going from one year to the next. Sometimes, a new model year will simply add a few new available options or a new exterior color, but the difference can also be much more dramatic. Going back to the Chevy Colorado, keep in mind that it received a major redesign for its second generation and the 2015 model year, then a facelift for 2021, and a third generation launched for the 2023 model year.

With the Chevy Silverado, you’re looking at an amazing truck that has dominated the market for more than 20 years, but you don’t have to go quite that far back with used models. Some key years to remember include 2016, when the third generation of the Silverado 1500 received a facelift, and 2019 when the fourth generation of the Silverado kicked off. The Silverado received a facelift and update for the 2022 model year, which is also worth remembering as you look at different options. These are all important because picking a 2022 model rather than a 2021 Silverado can drastically change things like Chevy’s standard engine and other major features.

Finally, Find the Perfect Truck

We know this has been quite a bit of information we’ve thrown at you today, but that’s why we broke it down into simple steps—take things one step at a time, and finding the right used Chevy truck becomes a lot easier. Of course, it’s still easier when you work with a dealership with friendly and knowledgeable people ready to assist you with everything you need, which is what you’ll find here at Service Chevrolet.

Once you know exactly what you require from your next pickup and narrow down your options so you can focus on some particular model years or trim levels, finding your next truck becomes much easier. Just remember to take your time to make sure you get everything you’re looking for and shop at a dealership that you can trust.

The Chevy lineup includes any number of different cars, trucks, and SUVs, but sitting at the top of them in terms of bold power and incredible capability is the Silverado. As a full-size truck, it does not get much better than the Chevy Silverado when you need a vehicle that can help get your job done and keep working as long as you need it to. That being said, you have several different options available to you with the Silverado—not only in terms of trim levels or engines but even in the overall model. As a Chevrolet dealer, we have people come to us all the time who need a truck but have no idea which one is right for them.

So today, we thought it would be fun to take you through the three main Chevy Silverado models available and see what each has to offer. We will start with the 2024 Silverado 1500, then move up to the more powerful Silverado 2500 HD, and finally check out the incredible capability of the Silverado 3500 HD. Keep in mind this will be a general overview, so be sure to dig deeper into any model you’re interested in—we’re always ready to help you figure out which truck has everything you’re looking for.

The 2024 Silverado 1500—Full-Size, Full of Features

Starting things off, we have the standard Silverado 1500, the flagship full-size truck for Chevy, and one of the most impressive pickups on the market. This is the truck that will work best for a wide range of drivers, offering impressive power, numerous engine choices, and a huge variety of configuration options and trim levels. Flexibility and customization are the name of the game with the Silverado 1500, which is why it’s such a good choice for so many people.

There are numerous cab sizes and bed lengths available with the Silverado 1500, so whether you want something reasonably small or a large beast with spacious seating inside for five people, we have you covered. Speaking of that interior, across the available trim levels, you can load the Silverado 1500 with incredible comfort and tech features. From power-adjustable seating to an available 13.4-inch Infotainment display and 12.3-inch Driver Information Center screen, the Silverado 1500 has a lot to offer. If you’re looking for extra luxury, you have high-end trims like the High Country, while the ZR2 trim delivers incredible off-road performance ready for any trail or the most remote job sites.

In terms of power, the Silverado 1500 gives you four different engines to choose from, giving you the options you need for your particular situation. The standard TurboMax I-4 engine is one of the best starting powertrains on the market, delivering 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque while giving you up to 9,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity. For incredible performance, you can move up to a 6.2L V8 gas engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque or choose a 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine that roars to life with 495 lb-ft of torque. Either of these two larger engines can handle up to 13,300 lbs of towing when properly equipped, giving you plenty of muscle to get your job done.

The 2024 Silverado 2500 HD—Middle Way with Big Performance

If you want more power than the Silverado 1500 can deliver, you’d do well to check out one of the Silverado HD Series models. You have two of them to choose from, starting with the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, which acts as a middle option between the 1500 (a lot of power) and the 3500 HD (So Very Much Power). In the past, going with something as powerful as a Silverado HD truck meant forgoing any niceties and focusing purely on capability. These days, however, you can get the incredible capability of something like the Silverado 2500 HD and still enjoy impressive interior features and options.

Just as with the Silverado 1500, many Silverado 2500 HD trims come with a stunning 13.2-inch Infotainment display joined by a 12.3-inch configurable Driver Information Center screen. Some drivers see this as going overboard with a work truck like this, but the ability to stay connected to coworkers or look at online maps and navigation while at a remote job site can be invaluable when you’re trying to get tough jobs done. And if you do a lot of driving to different sites as part of your job, you’ll appreciate comfortable seating that you can adjust to make every drive more enjoyable.

There are two engines available for the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, starting with a 6.6L V8 gas-powered engine that delivers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. If you’re searching for engine power, this is a fantastic place to start. It can handle up to 16,000 lbs of conventional towing capacity and gives you up to 3,689 lbs of payload rating. If you’re looking for more muscle, there’s an available 6.6L V8 Turbo-Diesel that provides 470 hp and a monstrous 975 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the Silverado 2500 HD can pull up to 20,000 lbs behind it, though it lowers payload capacity slightly due to its weight.

The 2024 Silverado 3500 HD—Fifth-Wheel Towing Behemoth

You can see that the Silverado 2500 HD is a terrific truck that can handle quite a lot more work than the standard Silverado 1500, particularly with its robust diesel engine. If you need to haul even more weight behind your truck—specifically when using a fifth-wheel or gooseneck setup—the 2024 Silverado 3500 HD should be at the top of your list. The Silverado 2500 HD and the 3500 HD have a lot in common in terms of their features, but the Silverado 3500 HD has something neither of the other two have: a dual rear-wheel (DRW) configuration option.

With two wheels on each side of the rear axle, a Silverado 3500 HD can handle much greater weight, both in terms of payload and fifth-wheel towing. You can also get a Silverado 3500 HD with a single rear-wheel (SRW) setup, but this takes away one of its most significant advantages over the 2500 HD. Consider this: a Silverado 3500 HD SRW can handle up to 4,502 lbs of payload with its gas engine or up to 4,403 lbs with its diesel engine, plus up to 20,000 lbs of conventional towing. That’s less than 1,000 lbs more weight for payload than the Silverado 2500 HD and the same towing—the payload is impressive, but nothing mind-blowing.

If you go with a DRW configuration, however, then you are looking at the same limit for conventional towing, but now you have a truck with up to 7,234 lbs of payload capacity—that’s nearly double the Silverado 2500 HD. Where a DRW Silverado 3500 HD takes things to another level entirely, however, is with fifth-wheel towing. The Silverado 2500 HD can handle up to 22,500 lbs of fifth-wheel towing, which is outstanding; by comparison, when properly equipped, the Silverado 3500 HD with a DRW setup can haul up to 36,000 lbs when gooseneck towing.

Find the Silverado to Help You Get Your Job Done

As you can see, the Silverado 3500 HD delivers tremendous power and capability with the right setup and under the right conditions. Understanding what you need from your truck and the kind of work you’re looking to do—whether you plan on doing any fifth-wheel towing, for example—makes it much easier to find the perfect pickup with everything you need. While this isn’t something we can do for you, we can help you explore your options with the Chevy Silverado and discuss what you’re looking for while answering your questions about what these trucks can do. That way, you can better understand what you need from your next pickup and choose the Silverado model that can handle it. Whether that’s the standard Silverado 1500, the impressive Silverado 2500 HD, or the raw power of the Silverado 3500 HD comes down to what you need—Chevy is ready to deliver.

A yellow 2024 Chevy Trailblazer Activ is shown from the front at an angle after leaving a Chevrolet dealer.

As you shop for your next SUV, you have a lot of decisions to make, including which brand has the kinds of models you want and what sorts of features best meet your needs. If you’ve narrowed things down to the models you’ll find at your favorite Chevrolet dealer, you’ve already made a lot of progress, but you still have some important factors to consider. For starters, Chevy makes eight different SUVs right now (not including electrified models), which gives you a lot of options to choose from. That kind of freedom is terrific and helps ensure you get what you need, but it can also be a bit overwhelming.

If you’re interested in a small SUV, then you have quite a few options available from Chevy, including the subcompact Trax and the compact Equinox. However, between these two models in the Chevy lineup is one of our absolute favorite SUVs on the market—the Trailblazer. When you’re looking at options available to you that can fit into any lifestyle, the Trailblazer is hard to beat and a great model to focus on. So, let’s take a good look at the 2024 model and see if it has everything you’re looking for.

Gorgeous Design and Sporty Performance

The first thing you’ll probably notice about the Trailblazer is that it looks terrific, with a slick design that includes strong proportions and sweeping curves across the length of it. The ACTIV and RS trims stand out even more with their two-tone rooflines, creating a striking contrast and a bolder look than most people expect from such a small SUV. Some new exterior colors are available this year, such as Cacti Green and Copper Harbor Metallic, allowing you to express your creative flair with this stunning vehicle.

Looking inside, the Trailblazer has two rows of seating for up to five passengers, as you’d expect from a compact model like this. Despite its small size, you’ll still find nearly 40 inches of legroom available for your rear-seat passengers, plus you get more than 54 cu.ft. of total cargo space to take advantage of behind the front seats. This lets you load up with shopping bags, luggage, camping supplies, or anything else you need to take with you when you hit the road. With the available hands-free liftgate, it’s easy to get access to the rear cargo area while loading or unloading the Trailblazer with your hands full.

In terms of performance, two engines are offered for the 2024 model starting with a 1.2L turbo engine with 137 hp. If you want something with more power, then there’s an available 1.3L turbo engine that delivers 155 hp for a sporty ride that’s perfect for zipping along the highway or navigating city streets. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Trailblazer, but you can choose all-wheel drive if you prefer the enhanced traction and control it provides. No matter which you choose, the Trailblazer offers a great time on the road, though we’re definitely partial to the larger engine and all-wheel drive performance.

Four Terrific Trim Levels to Choose From

As you’re trying to decide whether the Trailblazer is right for you, it can help to take a look at each of the four trim levels on offer. The differences between them can be pretty significant, and they beautifully illustrate the range of features and options you can get with this SUV. For the 2024 model, each trim has distinct exterior details, like their front fascias and grille designs, setting them apart from each other visually. Beyond that, let’s look at the differences you’ll find within each of these trims.

The Trailblazer LS

This is the starting trim for the Trailblazer and the standard trim with baseline features. Inside the Trailblazer LS, you’ll find an 11-inch HD color Infotainment touchscreen display that is easy to use and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Along with this big screen, you get a standard four-speaker sound system, cloth seating with a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and an eight-inch color Driver Information Center display. Perhaps best of all, you also get the Chevy Safety Assist package standard on every Trailblazer trim, which includes a Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with a Lane Departure Warning, and more. All of this comes together to create an SUV that’s fun to drive and designed to help keep you safe on the road.

The Trailblazer LT

If you’re looking for a straightforward SUV with some enhanced features, the LT trim is a great choice, giving you a few nice upgrades without going overboard. You’ll find a six-speaker sound system inside the LT, which provides rich audio throughout the cabin, along with keyless open and remote start functions that make it easier to get going in the morning. Choosing the LT trim also gives you access to several available options, such as a wireless charging pad and a panoramic power sunroof, which let you elevate your driving experience further.

The Trailblazer ACTIV

For a small SUV that is particularly sporty, the ACTIV trim level is a solid choice, thanks to some light off-road features that deliver an adventurous ride. For one thing, you get an off-road tuned suspension for better performance on dirt roads and rough terrain, along with a skid plate to protect the underbody of your Trailblazer. Along with enhanced performance, the ACTIV has Evotex seating that looks great and is highly durable, with heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and a heated, wrapped steering wheel for an added touch of sophistication.

The Trailblazer RS

Finally, we have the RS trim, which isn’t an upgrade over the ACTIV so much as it’s a different stylistic choice. While it lacks the off-road tuned suspension and skid plate of the ACTIV, the RS comes with 19-inch High Gloss Black wheels (other Trailblazer trims feature 17-inch wheels) that give it a stronger, more aggressive stance. To go along with this, the RS also has blacked-out exterior details, a unique mesh grille, and dual exhaust outlets with chrome tips to create a stylish ride that looks as cool as it is to drive. Otherwise, the RS has many of the same features as the ACTIV, including seating, an upgraded steering wheel, and available options like a wireless charging pad and adaptive cruise control.

A blue 2024 Chevy Trailblazer RS is shown from the front at an angle.

A Few More Things to Consider

Keep in mind that if there are features you’re looking for that we haven’t mentioned yet, they may be available options for the Trailblazer. For example, you can choose the Driver Confidence Package to add advanced safety technology such as Rear Park Assist and a Rear Cross Traffic Alert for added security while driving. With an available seven-speaker Bose Premium sound system, you can take your driving experience even further and fill the interior of the Trailblazer with incredible audio. Even more options are available, allowing you to customize this SUV to meet your needs perfectly.

So, Is the Chevy Trailblazer Right for You?

Only you can know which vehicle has everything you’re looking for, but it’s easy to see that the Trailblazer has a lot going for it. If you’re looking for a compact SUV that has seating inside for up to five people, with lots of cargo space for storage, impressive standard tech and safety features, and even more options to enhance your driving experience further, then the Trailblazer sounds like a great match. And if it’s not quite right, then as we said, Chevy makes seven other SUVs for you to check out and choose from. Whether you want something small, built for serious off-roading, or that has seating inside for up to eight passengers, we can take you through the Chevy lineup, look at what they offer, and find you the SUV you’ve been looking for.
