Dinosaur fossil in Lafayette, LADo you need a break from the hustle and bustle of your daily life? Are you interested in taking a mental break from whatever is currently worrying you to expand your knowledge of science or history? If so, you have to visit three fascinating and mentally stimulating museums in and around Lafayette, LA, including the Hilliard Art Museum and the Children’s Museum of Acadiana.

1. Lafayette Science Museum

Opened in 1969, this science museum has been known by locals for decades as the heart of the local museums. This science museum truly has something for children and adults of all ages. If you want to spark a love of astronomy in your child, check the museum’s website for the date of the next planetarium show. This one-of-a-kind show teaches children how the stars that were visible to the naked eye were used to navigate across unimaginably vast oceans.

However, the city’s science museum does not just teach children and curious adults about astronomy. It touches on over a dozen branches of science. If you have young children, you will love the interactive exhibits. Studies have shown that young children learn best through moving, touching, and experiencing things first-hand rather than being told how things worked without the tactile and visual stimulation. Touching things trains the two hemispheres of the brain to communicate effectively.

2. Hilliard Art Museum

Located at the ULL, the Hilliard Art Museum is a must-see for locals and visitors alike. The exhibits on display change, so we recommend going at least twice per year. We recommend going between September 12, 2020 and June 30, 2021 to check out the Acadian Brown Cotton: The Fabric of Acadiana exhibit. This exhibit was first displayed in 1983 at the Louisiana State Museum and later toured the world.

3. Children’s Museum of Acadiana

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child, niece, or grandchild is a lifelong thirst for knowledge. The Children’s Museum of Acadiana offers children the opportunity to play with purpose, exploring architecture with blocks, role-playing as a paramedic in a full-size ambulance with flashing lights and learning how to care for their own teeth in the To Tell the Tooth exhibit.

Your little ones will have so much fun, the best gift you can give them is an annual pass to the CMA. You may be surprised in 16 years when your child comes to you and says they want to become a dentist, news reporter, or chef.

Once you visit the three most compelling museums in the area, you’ll have a thirst for knowledge that can only be quenched by visiting other museums in the area.
