If you’re in Lafayette, LA, and on the lookout for a bargain or two, it’s well worth thinking about visiting second-hand or thrift stores. We know it’s good for the environment in a couple of ways. New items that would otherwise go to waste are given purpose, and older, but good condition, items get used for a longer time. That’s an advantage that makes finding a great deal in these stores feel even better! Here’s a taste of what can be found in the locality.

Hand Up Thrift

On Leonie Street, Hand Up Thrift is known for having a wide range of stock, and good prices. It’s a great place to hunt for furniture bargains, and electricals, but don’t overlook it for shoes, toys, household items, books, and more. Customers at Hand Up Thrift have described the ever-changing and extensive stock as “awesome”, and “cool”. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful too.

The store has an environmentally-friendly ethos, so any unused goods are recycled. It’s also partnered with the Affiliated Blind of Louisiana. The doors are open Monday thru Saturday.

Plato’s Closet

Plato’s Closet offers brand-name clothes for teens, and young adults. This branch is on Tucker Drive and has clothes, accessories, bags, and shoes. Brands include American Eagle, Adidas, Urban Outfitters, and Nike. Except for a 6 pm closing time on Sundays, they’re open until 7 pm, which is handy.

While not the very thriftiest for clothes, Plato’s Closet does have big brands, and designer names, at a lower cost. The general rule of thumb is that the goods come priced at 70% below retail. So, if it suits your style, it could suit your pocket as well.

Lafayette Habitat for Humanity Re-Store

Habitat for Humanity Re-Store has two stores in Lafayette. One is midtown on Johnston Street, the other on the Evangeline Thruway. They have furniture, and electricals, and are also a real boon for the bargain-hunting DIY-er or home decorator. That’s because they take donations of tools, building materials, bathroom fittings, flooring, and almost anything you might want for your project!

Of course, you won’t find any chemicals, or hazardous materials here, or Christmas trees either. By the same token, it’s not the place to find baby items, space heaters, or mattresses. However, the wide range of items accepted means you might find that they can supply windows, or hardware. When it comes to furniture, both modern pieces, and antique ones, can be found here. Open Tuesday thru Saturday.

In Lafayette, there are some fine stores to choose from. For young fashion, Plato’s Closet is the place. For clothes in general, plus household goods, furniture, and books, try Hand Up Thrift, or, for almost everything else, Lafayette’s Habitat for Humanity Re-Store has to be the one for you to visit.
