Your car battery is responsible for creating a chain reaction that turns your motor over when you turn your key in the ignition. If your battery is dying, it may not have enough power to create the spark required to start your motor. Today, we’re looking at three signs your Chevy is about to need a new car battery at your local Chevy dealer.
1. Your Battery Is Old
If your car battery is between three and six years old, it probably needs to be replaced. As with all batteries, they lose their ability to charge and hold a full charge over time. If they are exposed to excessive heat or humidity over prolonged periods of time, they will die faster, lasting only a few years.
If you live in a relatively cool, dry place, your battery may last closer to five or six years. A pretty good way to tell whether you are about to need a new battery is to check out your battery’s warranty information. If the warranty is almost expired, you need to have your car battery tested and find out if it is about to die.
2. Your Car Has Trouble Starting
If your car has trouble starting, it could be because your battery doesn’t have enough power to create enough of a spark to start your motor. Normally, your car battery operates at around 12 volts. If it operates at much less than 12 volts because it didn’t charge enough when you drove it or it couldn’t hold its charge, your powertrain’s combustion process won’t start. If it does, it will take longer than it used to.
3. Your Headlights Are Dim
Your headlights may dim because the lenses housing the light bulbs are dirty and need to be washed. Your headlights may dim because your light bulbs are old or there is something wrong with the wiring or spark plugs. However, if you are noticing other signs of a dying battery, like a Chevy that won’t start or struggles to start or a battery that is more than a few years old.
Dim headlights are a common symptom of a dying car battery because your battery only has so many volts of power that can be distributed to all of the electrical components of your vehicle. Power will first be distributed to the essential electrical components of your vehicle, like the computers that monitor your engine and transmission. After that, there may not be enough power to illuminate your headlights fully, play your radio, and charge your phone.
Your car battery may need to be replaced if it is old, you have trouble starting your car, or your headlights dim despite a clean housing unit and relatively new bulbs. Book an appointment with us today at Service Chevrolet Cadillac if you are noticing any of the most common signs of a dying car battery.
