Having a picnic is a great way to enjoy and explore the outdoor spaces cultivated in your city. They’re easy to plan, cost next to nothing, and provide an afternoon of leisure that anyone can enjoy. To help you find the best place to host your next picnic, here are some of the best picnic spots local to Lafayette, LA.

Girard Park

The Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department calls Girard Park its “unofficial flagship park”, and the care that goes into the park really shows. Amenities include a covered picnic pavilion with grills available, a fully stocked fishing pond, and plenty of green space perfect for laying out a picnic blanket. The park is located conveniently just across from the street from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Heymann Memorial Park

Heymann Memorial Park is a small three-acre garden just down the street from Girard Park. This park is a quaint space right in the middle of Lafayette’s historic Oil Center Cultural District and is well known for its quiet serenity. Historic markers line its walking path, so be sure to enjoy a leisurely stroll before you pack up.

Thomas Park

Thomas Park is tucked away in a residential neighborhood in southwest Lafayette and its location ensures it stays relatively quiet no matter the time of the week that you visit. Alongside covered pavilions, the park also provides an open soccer field and tennis courts. Best of all, the lawns and facilities are always clean and well maintained, lending a comfortable and inviting atmosphere to the park.

Graham Brown Memorial Park

Located on the north side of town, Graham Brown Memorial Park provides a quiet, dog-friendly place to have a picnic. The attached dog park will let Fido tire himself out while you’re enjoying lunch in the shade of one of the many covered pavilions available. When you’re finished with your meal, you can enjoy the open horseshoe pits or batting practice cages also available at the park.

Acadiana Park

Just south of Graham Brown Memorial Park is Acadiana Park, an excellent outdoor space in Lafayette. The shaded green space of the park offers an inviting place to lay out your blanket and picnic basket, and the forested area around the park offers a nice sense of seclusion from city life. After eating you could walk the trails in the park, enjoy the open frisbee golf course, or lie in the shade with a good book.

Saint Julien Park

Saint Julien Park is located southeast of Lafayette in nearby Broussard. The amenities of this park make the short drive worth it. There are dedicated spots for picnicking, open tennis and basketball courts, and even concessions available on site. Be wary of the event schedule, however, as outside food is prohibited in the park during events.
