interior-cleanWho says luxury cars can’t be family vehicles as well? Younger children may pose a threat to the valuable materials in your ritzy cabin, but there are many ways to keep your vehicle safe and at maximum value. Read on to see some effective methods to protect your car from inevitable spills or other messes.

Insurance

Some insurance companies offer policies that cover interior damage of all kinds. This can not only protect you from kid damage, but also tears from equipment or heavy objects. Call your broker or company if you already have a policy, and see if you can get this type of coverage added.

Entertainment

Never let small children touch electronic devices like DVD players or other loading entertainment items. Get your kids distracted in advance by setting up whatever games or movies they want in the back, and make sure to establish that they have to ask you when they want something different. A mess-covered disc shoved into a player will easily ruin it forever.

Carpet

Many parents use car seats and other items that press into and damage the carpet or mats over time. If you’d like a quick fix to stop a small carpet fray from getting worse, go to a craft store and buy a bottle of liquid resin. Dab some over the edges of the fray and it will solidify like clear glue, holding the material together.

Food

Limit eating and drinking in the car as much as possible, including for yourself. On long road trips, snacks are practical and sometimes the only option, but in all other cases make it clear that no one is supposed to eat or drink in the car. When you must eat in the car, use trays so that there’s less chance of crumbs falling to the floor or seats. There are many convenient types of trays, some of which easily fit into a cup holder and swivel in all directions.

Shoes

Shoes are the dirtiest things people wear, and track in all sorts of filth from the ground. Whether your kids like to hike, go to the beach, or are in athletics, make it a point to remove their shoes, tap them together, and put them in the back before you head out. This has much less risk of dirt, mud, or worse getting stuck in the carpet or seat backs.

Education

Ultimately, no strategy is more effective than having well-behaved children who know to respect the family car. Set the rules, enforce them, and be sure to follow them yourself. Otherwise, your child will likely be confused or will want to rebel. Answer all questions and explain clearly why your vehicle is so important and should be kept in good condition. Chances are they will gain a newfound respect for your luxury car and understand why your valuable possessions aren’t toys.

Follow these guidelines and your interior should have much less chance of wear, tear, stains, and more from absent-minded kids. If you have any special tricks or tips we didn’t mention, feel free to let us know!
