The radiator of your Chevy can be found directly behind the front grill after you open the hood. The radiator has many tiny fins that allow air to cool the liquid running through the radiator and back through your engine. Here are some of the things to look out for that signal you might need a radiator repair service or radiator replacement service by your Chevy dealer.

Engine Overheating

One of the most obvious signs you have an issue with your radiator is an overheating engine. The majority of engine overheating issues are related to a damaged or malfunctioning radiator. If your engine is overheating, pull your car over to the side of the road and turn the engine off. Driving with an engine that is overheating can, and will ultimately, cause costly engine damage.

Warning: Wait Before Taking a Look

An engine that is overheating has coolant fluid that is also extremely hot. You’ve pulled over because you need to let the engine cool down. Wait for at least 30 minutes for the engine to cool down. Too many people suspect they are low on coolant and rush to open the radiator cap to check. All too often, piping hot coolant explodes from the radiator, causing injury in many cases.

Low Coolant Level

Low coolant levels will cause your engine to overheat. You can only check this by removing the radiator cap. As long as your engine has cooled down, you can carefully remove the radiator cap with a rag or other material to protect your hand. If your coolant is low, there is a problem because coolant doesn’t just disappear. This could be a problem with your radiator or any number of related parts. This is the time to get in touch with us.

Leaking Coolant

Coolant leakage is a problem that needs to be solved immediately. Coolant that has overheated is released from the radiator into an overflow container. This will not result in coolant underneath your vehicle. If you notice puddles of coolant under your car, your vehicle is leaking coolant from somewhere. The problem is finding where the coolant is leaking from. The next thing to do is get in touch with us immediately for guidance.

Coolant Quality and Color

Coolants come in bright and clean colors. The most common is bright green. If the coolant does not look the same color that it was, several issues could be the cause. Internal engine damage is one possible cause.  Most of the time, dirty coolant is caused by a dirty radiator. For example, the fins are contaminated with bugs, or the radiator has become rusty. This is not the time to delay seeking our help.
