When you think of staying fit, what do you picture? For many people, it’s a specific type of exercise or even a location. Lafayette, LA is all about fitness and has plenty to offer those who want to stay in shape! Here are five great ways to get moving around this city.

1. Kayaking on the Bayou Vermilion

Louisiana’s waterways are a gateway to outdoor adventure like no other in the state. Kayaking or canoeing in this region is an extraordinary experience, and it provides ideal conditions for animal viewing, birdwatching, and photography.

Spend some time appreciating the natural beauty of hardwood forests in and around Lafayette! Try out the Bayou Vermilion, which snakes through Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes, passing through swamps, agricultural lands, and cities such as Lafayette and Abbeville.

2. Hiking at the Lake Martin Levee Trail

Hiking is an excellent way for the entire family to enjoy the outdoors at any fitness level without breaking the budget. It lets you see locations that you would otherwise miss out on at a pace that enables you to soak up your environment.

One route worth taking is the Lake Martin Levee Trail. The trailhead is well-signed and features a gorgeous view of the lake to the east and marshes on the west side of the levee. Be aware that the Levee Trail is closed for gator nesting season from June through October!

3. Biking at the Atchafalaya Wilderness Trail

The Atchafalaya Wilderness Trail is a long gravel trail that is a bicyclist’s paradise. You’re in for some unforgettable encounters as you go through the Henderson levee, across three parishes, and into Franklin.

Explore the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, see a sunset at Lake Fausse Pointe Overlook, or find canoe trails. If you want to stay longer, there are also campsites available.

4. Workout at the Lafayette Louisiana YMCA

Having access to a gym membership gives you so many different options for staying in shape. One option is going for a rigorous workout session at the Lafayette Louisiana YMCA!  You can get your heart pumping on the machines or go for a swim. Plus, you will always have people to work out with!

5. Tee Off at the Wetlands Golf Course

Visit the Wetlands Golf Course and be treated to some of Lafayette’s best golf. The 18-hole Lafayette golf course is ideal for all golfers who want to be engaged while still having a good time. The wide-open fairways and gently undulating landscape will allow you to disconnect from the outside world for a few hours and focus on your game. With five tees spanning 7,300 yards to a little over 5,000 yards, the Wetlands Golf Course can accommodate players of all skill levels.
