Get in Touch With Nature: 4 Destinations in Driving Distance of Lafayette, LA

Lafayette, LA is a stunningly gorgeous city that provides its residents with roughly 1,500 acres of parks. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in the area if you have a reliable vehicle, like a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer. Today, we’re looking at our favorite destinations within driving distance of the city that help us get in touch with nature.

Get in Touch With Nature: 4 Destinations in Driving Distance of Lafayette, LA

1. Chicot State Park

When we start feeling disconnected from nature, we love visiting Chicot State Park at 3469 Chicot Park Rd. You can fish from Lake Chicot for reader sunfish, crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass. Alternatively, you can rent a boat and enjoy a unique perspective of this 6,400-acre park. Other ways you can reconnect with nature in this park include:

  • Mountain biking
  • Cycling
  • Camping
  • Hiking

2. Acadiana Park Nature Station

Acadiana Park Nature Station at 1205 East Alexander Street is also worth visiting if you need to reconnect with nature. Here, you can find a free nature station and access six miles of trails from sunrise to sundown daily. There are many dirt trails that are ideal for hiking or trail running, and there is a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that can be enjoyed.

3. Lake Martin at Cypress Island Preserve

We also recommend making some time to visit Lake Martin at Cypress Island Preserve. Located at 1264 Prairie Hwy, the 765-acre Lake Martin provides ample opportunities to feel closer to nature. Fishing and paddling are two of our favorite things to do here, but there are other ways you can enjoy the area.

For instance, you can look for white ibis, anhingas, herons, and egrets while hiking around the lake. Boating is another popular thing to do here, and it provides another excellent opportunity to spot birds.

4. Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge

Finally, we recommend visiting Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge at 209 Nature Road if you need a break from city life for a while. There are lots of things you can do here, including biking, birding, and running. This wildlife refuge is also a great place to fish for gar, catfish, bowfin, crappie, sunfish, and largemouth bass. There are roughly eight miles of canals you can fish from, and you can fish from the Lacassine Bayou.

There are numerous places within driving distance of Lafayette that you can visit if you want to strengthen your connection to nature. However, you must remember to bring your vehicle in for routine maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly for as long as possible.
