test-driveAre you ready to buy a new car? If so, you should know that one of the more important aspects of the car buying experience is test driving the car (or cars) you are thinking about buying. Why? Because you don’t truly know if the car you have your sights set on is the right one for your driving style or needs until you sit behind the wheel and give it a spin. You wouldn’t buy a pair of running shoes before testing them out and making sure they fit perfectly…so why would you invest in a car without test driving it to make sure it fits perfectly with your driving style?

Before you run out to test drive the car you want to buy, it’s important to bear a few tips in mind:

Consider Test Driving More Than One Car

You may have the exact car in mind, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that car is the only one you need. Make a list of at least three to five cars to test drive so that you can get a more accurate picture of the way different cars operate.

Make an Appointment

Rather than just showing up to the dealership armed with your list of cars you want to test drive, making an appointment with a member of the sales staff or online can ensure they have the cars ready for you to test drive. Otherwise, you might have to endure a delay waiting for a sales member, or the car you want to test drive won’t be available that day.

Have a Checklist

Think about what is most important to you when it comes to your new car. Is it technological features? If so, make sure the salesperson gives you a demonstration of all the bells and whistles. Is it cargo room? Open up the trunk and backseat to see how roomy it is. Is it the engine? Have the salesperson pop the hood and point out the specific features.

Think About Driveability

When you’re behind the wheel driving the car, keep a few things in mind: how smooth the car travels, how quickly it can pick up speed and stop, how quiet the engine is, how responsive the steering is, etc. Also consider visibility and how you feel while driving: comfortable or uncomfortable?

Your day of test driving is just that — a test drive. This is not a moment to make a sudden decision about what car you want to buy. You are simply trying out different styles of cars to see which one feels the best. You may want to bring along a friend to make sure you stick to this rule.

Buying a new car is an exciting time in your life, so enjoy every minute of this experience. Take your time to test drive the car you are thinking about buying before making any decisions, though. Buying a car is a significant investment, and you want to buy the best car for your needs.
