  1. The Original Cajun Food Tour

There is nothing like the food in and around Lafayette, and what better way to taste it than on a food tour? The Original Cajun Food Tour takes you on a three-hour excursion in a comfortable, customized tour bus. You get to discover the history of Lafayette, experience some of the culture, and get some great food along the way. There are at least five different tastings at local restaurants where passengers eat Cajun food such as king cake, gumbo, boudin, and étouffée. The tour company works with almost 30 different eateries, so the food you get to sample depends on the tour and the season.

  1. Lake Martin Swamp Tours

If you take a Lake Martin Swamp Tour, you will get to experience the swamps first hand. These kayaking tours are quiet and peaceful, allowing you to see some of the wildlife and be a part of the habitat. Instead of a loud engine, you paddle quietly through the water with time to take in all the scenery around you. The tours start at Pack & Paddle and go through a Cypress cathedral. Your guide will tell you all about the lake and what lives in it as you paddle.

  1. Champagne’s Cajun Swamp Tours

If you don’t want to paddle, Champagne’s Cajun Swamp Tours offers motorized boats for their passengers. The swamp boats hold up to twenty passengers and take you through swamps and bayous. You can see some of the over 205 different species of birds that live in the swamp as you ride under 500-year old moss groves. At any point along the tour, you might come across alligators up to 14 feet long. Throughout the tour, your guide will tell you all about the swamp. You’ll learn about the Cajuns and how they used to harvest the alligators and their eggs. You’ll also head into a duck blind and see all kinds of fish including crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass.

  1. LARC’s Acadian Village

Take a tour at Acadian Village and see what life was like in an 1800s Cajun village. You can go on a self-guided tour or have a tour guide take you through if you schedule in advance. There are 11 buildings around the village including Doctor Salles’ House, Bernard House, and a blacksmith shop.

There is a lot to see and do in the Lafayette area. The local tours are one of the best ways to see and experience life in this part of the country.
