Art Museum of Greater Lafayette

Founded in 1909, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette celebrates the power of art and features collections and exhibitions that will inspire you. Meander through the halls to see both permanent and traveling exhibits that include paintings, abstract works, and artwork made from various elements. As you explore each gallery, use the onsite prompts to help you visualize and gain a deeper understanding of each piece and see it through the artists’ eyes.

Docent tours are offered throughout the year and can be tailored to your specific interests. Join in on one of the classes where you can learn watercolor, digital drawing, portrait and figure drawing, glass flameworking, and pottery. The museum also plays host to various events and even offers yoga classes on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is located at 102 S 10th St. and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free parking is available in the lot on 10th St.

Imagination Station

Kids will get a kick out of exploring the many hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) exhibits at Imagination Station. The museum and activity center provides the perfect place for kids to strengthen their scientific literacy while igniting their imaginations.

In addition to the numerous permanent exhibits, Imagination Station also hosts events throughout the year for young and old alike, such as tye-dye and snow cone socials, haunted labs, and a Hands-On Transportation event. Kids 7 to 17 years of age who have an interest in coding should check out the free computer club, CoderDojo, where they learn coding, robotics, and enjoy tech-related activities.

Imagination Station is located at 600 N 4th St and is open Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Avery Island

For something a little different and spicy on a rainy day, head to Avery Island, about 20 miles south of Lafayette to learn how the famous Tabasco hot sauce is made. Self-guided tours allow you to explore the factory to learn how these spicy pepper plants are processed into this delicious and popular sauce. A museum features exhibits that give you a more in-depth look at the history of Tabasco and the makers of the sauce. Stop by the mash warehouse to see where the sauce sits for three years before being ready to pour on top of your favorite foods. And don’t miss out on the tasting room where you can test your spice skills by trying Tabasco’s numerous varieties.
