2019-Chevy-Silverado-whiteIf you’ve got a big job ahead of you or you’d like to buy a new RV for a family road trip, you’ll want a truck that can tow just about any payload. Thankfully, you can get the job done right with the 2019 Chevy Silverado. Its impressive towing capacity and multiple engine configurations make it the perfect truck for towing, whether your needs be work or fun related. Here’s a quick guide to what each engine option will give you in regards to towing and performance.

4.3-Liter V-6 Ecotec

The smallest and least powerful engine in the 2019 Silverado 1500 lineup is the 4.3-liter V-6. Equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. Any trims equipped with this powertrain will be able to tow up to 7,600 pounds. While this is plenty capable, you’ll want a more powerful engine if you plan on trailering larger items.

 5.3-Liter V-8 Ecotec

When it comes to base engine configurations without any additional components, this is the strongest engine of the three in regards to towing capacity. The engine itself produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough to tow up to 9,800 pounds. This is sufficient for all but the heaviest payloads.

You also have to consider your transmission for this level, as there are two to choose from. There’s a six-speed automatic transmission, which includes the towing ratings listed above, and an eight-speed automatic transmission, which tows slightly less at 9,300 pounds.

6.2-Liter V-8 Ecotec

The largest engine of the bunch has the highest towing potential, but as a stock option, it’s slightly less powerful than the 5.3-liter version. It generates 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This configuration can tow up to 9,400 pounds.

Why Towing Ratings Differ in Stronger Engines

You may see a few of those stats and wonder why you might lose towing capacity as the engine size increases or the number of gears in the transmission goes up. The answer is quite simple. The added weight of these components outweighs the benefits the engine or transmission adds. This is why you see the steep drop off from the 5.3-liter six-speed compared to the 6.2-liter eight-speed.

Add a Max Trailering Package

The towing capacity of your 2019 Silverado 1500 isn’t entirely dependent on the engine configuration or transmission you choose. Most trucks, including the Silverado, allow you to upgrade your towing capacity with a number of features included with the Max Trailering Package. Upgrade to this option if you want nothing to stand in your way.

The 5.3-liter engine can tow up to 11,000 pounds with the Max Trailering Package. This capacity is the same for both the six- and eight-speed transmissions. The trailering package is where the 6.2-liter engine gains some ground. With the additional towing package, the 6.2-liter engine can tow up to 12,500 pounds.

Determining how much you’ll need to tow is the first step in deciding which Silverado engine configuration is best for you. You can then narrow down the extensive Silverado 1500 trim options. Find your perfect 2019 Chevy Silverado by checking out our online inventory today!
