Named with a nod to the Acadian hero Joseph Broussard, Beausoleil Books, situated at 302 Jefferson St., is a real treat for book lovers. There is a wide choice of subjects to choose from, including a large section of French literature to cater to the area’s Cajun heritage. The store has regular readings and events for both adults and children.

Situated at 302 Jefferson St., Beausoleil’s is easily accessible, with parking available in front of the store. Inside, it has a warm and welcoming decor to set against the rows of bookshelves. Sumptuous reading chairs are positioned close to the window, allowing you to browse your potential purchases comfortably.

Book Rack Acadiana

Book Rack Acadiana is the place to head if you are an avid reader. Located at 2476 W Congress St., the store is a labyrinth of books. Wall-to-wall bookshelves with the odd chair for reading positioned where possible. The books on the shelves are mostly stacked horizontally, every nook appearing used, with no space wasted in an effort to get as many different books on display as possible.

The store is a family-owned business with a history stretching back  40 years, with the founder’s granddaughters now running it. It sells new and used volumes covering subjects as diverse as classical fiction to paranormal romance. The stock is regularly updated, so there is always something fresh to discover. With parking outside plentiful, you can afford to park up your Chevrolet Trax and make your visit a leisurely affair.

Acadian Religious at 2819 A Johnston St. should be your port of call if you are seeking a more spiritual selection of books. Acadian has been selling books and other gifts for over 60 years and is part of the fabric of Lafayette. Inside the store, you will discover an extensive selection of Christian literature that can appeal to your soul as well as your mind.

Unmoja Books

If you are interested in African American culture, then Unmoja Books should be on your list of places to visit. A small independent store, it focuses solely on books written about Black culture or by Black authors. They cover the topic extensively and have works that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. You can find them at 1006 Surrey St., part of the Southern Development Foundation Business Center.
