1. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve-Acadian Cultural Center 

Visit the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve- Acadian Cultural Center at 501 Fisher Rd. to learn about Lafayette’s incredible history and the original Cajun people. These original Cajuns, or Acadians, have fascinating cultural practices, food, and oral traditions.

There’s an in-depth video presentation, plenty of displays to explore, and a lovely gift shop where you can pick up souvenirs. It will give you a comprehensive overview of the people who settled in Lafayette and how their culture shaped the modern landscape of Louisiana.

2. Moncus Park

Moncus Park, at 2913 Johnston St., is a lovely natural haven in the heart of Lafayette. This massive green space has plenty of trails to explore, relaxing places to picnic, fishing, and treehouses for the kids. There’s also an on-site dog park where your pets can roam free, or you can explore the rest of the park with leashed animals.

You can also get to Orlando Mountain from the park and see some of the best panoramic views in the city or pay your respects at the Veterans Memorial. Best of all, you can explore to your heart’s content for free.

3. Azalea Trail

Nature lovers will want to check out Azalea Trail, 1400 NW Evangeline Thwy. Journey along the trail and check out Lafayette’s best blooms in various colors, some of the city’s hot spots and historical sites, and Lafayette’s gorgeous homes. You can easily spend several hours soaking in all that Lafayette has to offer.  

While meandering through the Azalea Trail, you’re bound to see other Lafayette highlights like the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and the Alexander Mouton Home that you’ll want to bookmark for later.

4. La Maison de Begnaud House

La Maison de Begnaud House, at 110 Benoit Patin Rd., is a great place to get information on everything to do in Lafayette, take some free French classes, and listen to local weekly music. Visiting is an excellent way to get a good overview of what you can expect from the city, and since it’s centrally located right downtown, you’ll have no problem finding it and stopping in for some great jams and fellowship.
