How to Check the Tire Pressure on Your Chevy

The pressure of your car’s tires should always be kept at the recommended pounds per square inch (PSI) for your model. This ideal PSI can be found in your owner’s manual and also usually on a sticker inside the driver-side door. It doesn’t take long to check tire pressure. Simply follow the steps below and ask at your local Chevy dealership if you’d like a demonstration.

How To Check Tire Pressure on Your Chevy

Prepare Your Tools

You’ll need a tire air pressure gauge to measure the pressure. Either an analog or digital gauge will be fine. If your tires are under-inflated, you’ll also need an air compressor to pump air into the tire. You can purchase a home air compressor or use the compressor at your local dealership.

Start When the Tires Are Cold

While driving, friction from the road generates heat inside car tires, which expands the air and temporarily increases the air pressure. So for an accurate reading, it’s important to start when the tires are cold. Wait a few hours after driving or start first thing in the morning.

Remove the Air Valve Cap

Each tire has an air valve that pokes out from the sidewall. Remove the cap and store it carefully so you won’t lose it.

Apply the Air Pressure Gauge

Now press the gauge against the valve nozzle for a few seconds. You’ll probably hear a hiss of escaping air, which is normal and fine. The screen on the gauge will give you the tire’s current PSI.

Adjust Air Pressure As Required

Compare the PSI reading to the recommended PSI for your tires. If the reading is high, you can use the dot on the back of your pressure gauge against the valve nozzle to release air from the tire. Carefully release air in small increments until the PSI is just right.

If the PSI reading is low, you’ll need to add air using your home air compressor or the compressor at your dealership. Apply the nozzle of the compressor hose to the tire’s air valve to pump in the air. Increase the pressure in increments until the right PSI is reached.

Put the Valve Cap Back On

You can now replace the valve cap. Then move on to the next tire and repeat the process.

Ask Your Local Chevy Dealer To Demonstrate

If you’ve never checked your tire pressure before, you might want to see a quick demo before you try. Ask about this at your local dealership; the staff will be happy to show you the ropes.

Heed Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Your car may have an automatic Tire Pressure Monitoring System that helps you keep an eye on the air pressure inside your tires. With this advanced system, if pressure ever becomes too low or too high in one of your tires, you’ll receive a warning on your dashboard.
